Stay Safe on the Water with These Five Steps
Here at Woody’s Watersports, we always want those who ride our jet skis to have an amazing time out on the water in the safest way possible. Luckily, we can sum up our safety goals with one word:
SIPDE. That stands for Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, and Execute. Let’s dive in!
Just like driving a car, the moment you get on a jet ski, you should be scanning your surroundings. If you focus on what is in front of you, then you could miss a hazard off to the side.
While you are scanning, take note of any potential hazards that you might see. If you notice some kids horsing around nearby, try to avoid them. If the water looks rough elsewhere, understand that you should stay clear of that area.
Focus on potential scenarios that could occur if the hazards that you identified start to emerge. What would you do if those kids got too close? How will you steer to avoid getting the brunt of those big waves? If you can effectively predict what you would do in certain circumstances, you’ll be prepared to react calmly and efficiently.
Now that you understand the potential ways to avoid the scenario, it is time to decide the specific course of action that you will take should the hazard come to fruition. How best can you minimize risk with this potential threat?
Once you’ve made up your mind, execute the action that you decided on. Try and stick to the original plan you had made. The last thing you want to do is change your mind last minute because that will only further complicate your situation and hinder your response time. In many cases, the easiest way to avoid a hazard is with a routine maneuver.
