Salt Water and Jet Skis

Salt Water and Jet Skis

At Woody’s Watersports, we know how much you love riding Jet Skis, especially in Florida, where the weather is always rocking and fun in the sun is almost inevitable. But it isn’t all fun and games. You need to take care of your personal watercrafts, especially here where salt water is king.

We often have customers who have ridden before in their local lakes or ponds who ask us if salt water is a problem for our Jet Skis. Good question! Let’s look into the ins and outs of seawater and its effect on personal watercraft.

Salt Water and Jet SkisEffects of Salt Water

Salt water is no joke. It can be very corrosive to vehicles both in the water and on the land. If you don’t care for your personal watercrafts, you could be looking at major damage in the long term. The thing is, there isn’t much you can do to avoid it. The Earth is 70 percent water, and only 2.5 percent of that is fresh water, which means that most of the places to ride will feature salt water that’s ready to do damage – if you let it.

What Can You Do?

It is essential that you make it part of your regular routine to wash off your personal watercraft after use in salt water. Rinsing your craft as soon as possible is necessary because you need to prevent the salt from beginning the process of causing corrosion.

Rinsing is as simple as it sounds. Get a hose that’s pumping fresh water and hit every part of the machine (except for the electronic components, of course), getting that salt off as best as you can. Once you rinse the exterior, open the engine bay and clean that area as well. Clean the seats and coverings, especially vinyl which can be deceivingly susceptible to salt water damage.

You can also flush the salt water from the interior of the Jet Ski through the water injection port. To do this, connect the hose to the port, pumping in fresh water and circulating it though the whole watercraft. You can also use a salt dissolver to help remove salt completely.

You want to keep your vehicles out of salt water as often as possible when you aren’t riding them. Keeping them sitting in the ocean means almost guaranteed damage.
