Jet Ski Safety Advice

Riding a Jet Ski can be fun and exhilarating, but Jet Skis are powerful machines and can also be dangerous if not used properly. So what can you do to make sure you stay safe on your ride?

The U.S. Coast Guard considers Jet Skis to be Class A vehicles, so the rules for boats 16 feet and under apply. This means that the Jet Ski should have a fire extinguisher, a functioning backfire flame arrestor and a ventilation system to protect you in the event of a fire. A signaling device such as a whistle or horn is also required for driving. Of course, one of the most important safety device you can have with you is a life vest. Even if you’re a great swimmer, wearing a flotation device will keep you safe if the unexpected occurs.

Stay in control

Jet Skis are small and fast, so it’s important to stay in control. There may be a tempting wake to jump, but you don’t want to land awkwardly or upside down. And be aware of what and who is surrounding you in the water – Jet Skis can take up to 300 feet to stop from driving at full speed, so keeping your distance can help keep you and others safe.

Watch where you’re going

Try to steer clear of shallow waters, as debris like small stones and pebbles can easily get caught in the Jet Ski. If you hear a clicking or clunking sound, something may be wrong. Shut off the Jet Ski to ensure your safety, and have it towed to shore so the issue can be properly fixed.
